In 2016, the New York Times called Decatur “Atlanta’s gastronomic equivalent of Berkeley or Brooklyn.” Noteworthy dining spots include Brick Store Pub, Cakes & Ale, Revival, and many other restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, ice cream parlors, and bakeries. Decatur is home to Eddie’s Attic, an infamous live music venue. Dozens of independent boutiques and art galleries line the streets, or you can opt for more traditional shopping at the nearby North DeKalb Mall or The Gallery at South DeKalb. The DeKalb Farmer’s Market offers an extensive selection or produce and international ingredients. Decatur has a thriving art and festival scene, hosting the Decatur Arts Festival, the Decatur Beach Festival, the Decatur Book Festival, the Decatur Maker Faire, plus many other parades, concerts, wine crawls, and art walks. The Decatur City School District consists of the newly built College Heights Early Learning Center, five elementary schools, the 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue for fourth and fifth graders, Renfroe Middle School, and Decatur High School. The Decatur City School District was the highest performing school district in Georgia on the SATs for the 2014-2015 school year. In addition, several top colleges are located in or around Decatur, including Emory University, Agnes Scott College, and Georgia Perimeter College.
